If you're holding a rotating-category cash back card, Q3 2026 (July 1 through September 30) is already underway — which means the clock is running on both the bonus categories and the activation window. Here's exactly what's bonused this quarter, when you need to activate by, and how to split spending if you carry more than one of these cards.
Discover it Cash Back — Q3 2026
Discover's Q3 categories, active July 1 – September 30, 2026, on up to $1,500 in combined purchases (then 1%):
- Gas stations and EV charging — pump and in-station purchases, plus public EV charging stations.
- Public transportation — airlines, bus, rail, ferries, and chartered buses.
- Flights — new to Discover's rotating lineup this quarter.
- Drug stores — pharmacies and online pharmacy purchases.
Activation is open from June 1 through September 30, 2026 — later activation still typically applies retroactively to qualifying purchases made earlier in the quarter, but don't rely on that; activate as soon as you're aware of the categories.
Chase Freedom / Freedom Flex — Q3 2026
Chase's Q3 categories, active July 1 – September 30, 2026, also on up to $1,500 in combined purchases (then 1%):
- Gas stations and EV charging — including some convenience store purchases classified under gas.
- Public transit — passenger trains, buses, ferries, toll bridges/highways, and parking lots and garages.
- Select live entertainment — concerts, sporting events, theatrical productions, zoos, aquariums, amusement parks, and museums.
- Donations to United Way — must be made directly through United Way's official channels to qualify.
Activation runs June 15 through September 14, 2026. Chase has stated the 5% applies retroactively to qualifying purchases made earlier in the quarter once you activate — but again, activate early rather than counting on that.

A few things to double check before you spend
- Activate on both cards separately. Activating one issuer's card has no effect on the other — each requires its own opt-in through its app or website.
- Watch the different activation deadlines. Chase's window closes September 14, nearly two weeks before Discover's September 30 close and before the quarter itself ends. Don't wait until the last week of the quarter to activate the Chase side.
- Confirm how a specific merchant is categorized before assuming a purchase qualifies — categorization is based on how the merchant is coded, which doesn't always match how you'd casually describe the purchase.
- Route anything outside these categories to a flat-rate card rather than letting it fall to 1% on a rotating card that isn't bonusing it this quarter.
The bottom line
Q3 2026 overlaps meaningfully between Discover and Chase Freedom Flex on gas and transit, with Discover adding flights and drug stores, and Chase adding live entertainment and United Way donations. Activate both cards now if you haven't already, keep the $1,500 caps and Chase's earlier activation deadline in mind, and split overlapping categories across both cards to get the most out of the quarter.
